7-Zip

7-Zip is a utility program to help you extract compressed files and create your own compressed files in several different formats. With these tools you can easily send large quantities of information or open compressed files you receive without hassle.

Pros

Format options: This program can handle multiple compression formats. It can package files into 7z, ZIP, GZIP, BZIP2, and TAR formats, and it can unpack all those, in addition to ARJ, CAB, CHM, CPIO, DEB, DMG, and more.

Advanced capabilities: This app is straightforward enough that novice users will have no trouble accessing its basic features. But for more advanced users, there are other options as well that make this program even better. These include the ability to create self-extracting 7z files and the option to add password protection to compressed files.

Cons

Compression process: The compression process this app uses takes more time to complete than some alternative programs' processes do. Compressions carried out through 7-Zip also require a lot of system resources while they're in progress.

Bottom Line

7-Zip is completely free to download and use, and its many upsides far outweigh the few minor drawbacks that come with it. If you're looking for an alternative to WinZip or another similar program, this is a good option to consider.

Downloading and Installing VLC Media Player for Windows

Downloading VLC Media Player

VLC Media Player is one of the best media players out there and it is available as a free download. For Windows PCs, you can download this software from the official download page at: http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-windows.html

At the download page mentioned above, there are three file types which can be used to install VLC Media Player in your Windows Machine:

An Exe Installer Package: A direct installing .exe file. Download this file, open it and the installation process begins.

A 7zip Package: A .7z file which requires the file compressor 7 Zip to extract the contents of this file.

A Zip Package: A Zip compressed package file which can be extracted with several file archiving software including WinRar and 7 Zip.

Your downloaded file name will be something like vlc-2.1.0-win32.exe, vlc-2.1.0-win32.7z and vlc-2.1.0-win32.zip for the Exe, 7Zip and Zip packages respectively. The version number (2.1.0) might be different.

The download link above will download the 32 bit version of this software. It works fine in 64 bit Windows machines but if you want to download and install/use a native 64 bit VLC Media Player for your 64 bit Windows system then visit the following link:

http://download.videolan.org/pub/videolan/vlc/last/win64/

From there, you will get access to VLC Media Player self installing file (.exe) or compressed files (.7z or .zip). Read the file names and download the files correctly. For example at the current version number 2.1.0 the file names for exe, 7z and zip files are vlc-2.1.0-win64.exe, vlc-2.1.0-win64.7z and vlc-2.1.0-win64.zip respectively.

MOV file won't play sound!

Hi Stefan, I suspect the issue may be due to the fact that a mov file can contain multichannel audio. ELAN will only play the first audio-stream, so you would need to convert the MOV to an mp4 and donwnmix the audio.
To do so, download Handbrake (https://handbrake.fr/) and load the MOV file. Set the container to mp4 under output & set a destination. video codec should be set to H.264 and under ‘optimise video’ set the slider to ‘ultrafast’.

Under the Audio Tab, next to ‘source’ you can add and remove tracks and select from 1 or multiple sources (depending on your file). There should only be one audio track! You can remove other remaining tracks by clicking the red cross icon on the right. Next, you will set the source for the track.

If there is only 1 source to choose from, set the codec to AAC, 320k and mixdown to stereo. Press ‘Start’ and you will get a playable file in ELAN.

However, if there are 2 (or more) sources you can select, you must figure out what source contains the audio. A simple way to do that is to open the file in VLC (leave handbrake open), and while its playing, click ‘Audio’ from the menubar. There should be a submenu ‘Audio Track’ which will show ‘Track 1’ and ‘Track 2’. you can toggle which track you want to hear, and determine which one has the actual audio.

Back in Handbrake, select the proper audio source, make sure to select mixdown to ‘stereo’ and press ‘Start’.
After this, you should end up with a playable file in ELAN, containing the right audio-track.

If this is not the case, you may have another issue, which may be harder to resolve.
Jeroen
