Static electricity is useful but dangerous. It is the energy that makes your hair stand on end. On its own, it is not dangerous. Risks occur when it suddenly discharges causing a spark or lightning.

What Can You Use as an Anti-static Mat for Working on Computers?

If you're going to start working on a computer without taking precautions against electrostatic discharge, plan on fixing more than what you planned to do. Anti-static mats are a great way to keep stray static discharges out of your computer's sensitive innards, but fixes sometimes need to be made in a hurry and you just don't have one handy. Rather than running out and buying one, there are alternatives to keep stray static from putting your computer out of business.

The Importance of Static Protection

The integrated circuits -- chips, as they're commonly known -- inside your computer are made up of tiny transistors, more than 700 million of them in a CPU such as Intel's i7 processor. The transistors in these devices are very susceptible to damage from static electricity. Just walking across a vinyl floor can cause you to generate as much as 12,000 volts of electricity -- more than enough to destroy an integrated circuit.

How Anti-static Mats Work

A typical anti-static mat is comprised of three layers. The top layer is a static dissipative vinyl that discharges conductors; the middle layer is a conductive metal sheet that provides the discharge path to ground, and the bottom one is a non-skid foam. Some mats then are plugged into an electrical outlet's ground pin to provide a link to a ground, allowing the static charge to safely dissipate.

Anti-static Mat Alternatives

Anti-static wrist straps are readily available and relatively inexpensive -- they're even available in one-use disposable form. They operate on the same general principle, with an alligator clip lead that is connected to the metal chassis of the PC to keep you grounded. If a commercial wrist strap isn't available, you can fashion one out of a rubber band, a metal thumbtack and a clip lead with alligator clips on both ends. Push the tack through the rubber band, then put the rubber band on your wrist with the pointy end of the tack facing out. Attach one end of the clip lead to the point of the tack and the other to the chassis of the computer. Make sure the tack stays in contact with your skin, and that it is bare metal with no paint covering the head.

General Anti-static Precautions

Even without a wrist strap, it's still possible to minimize the chances of electrostatic discharge. When opening the case of the computer, touch the metal chassis before you reach in to touch the circuit boards; if possible, keep one hand on the chassis at all times and handle the boards by the edge only. Keep all plastic items such as waste bins and phones away from the work area, and push your desk chair away and stand up while working -- rolling chairs generate large amounts of static electricity. Avoid wearing polyester and wool clothing, and if possible raise the humidity of the work area as moisture in the air reduces static electricity charge levels.
