"Repairing data archive" is the technical phrase used when the game client determines that there is a problem with the game's data file and attempts to fix it by rebuilding the database. This takes anywhere from ten to fifteen minutes, depending on the speed of your computer's hard drive and CPU.

Common causes[edit]

The message only appears when there is an issue with the files on your computer, but the cause is rarely obvious. Persistent recurrence of the message usually points to a root cause that can be addressed:

Storage space issues.

These issues can be resolved by cleaning up the hard drive: e.g. defragmentation, clearing out unused files, or emptying the recycle bin. Alternatively, you can reinstall the game or replace the data file (delete it and run the game using the game using the -image switch); either of these methods of replacing can take several hours or more.

  1. Insufficient storage space on the hard drive.
  2. Fragmented hard drive.
  3. Fragmented gw.dat file.

Viruses, trojans, and other malware can cause similar symptoms. You will notice that other programs are affected or that your internet connection speeds are throttled. Be sure to run anti-malware software and run periodic full system checks.

Hardware issues

Hardware issues are likely to affect Guild Wars sooner than other programs because of the large size of the data file. If your computer has a hardware problem, you will typically see other symptoms, as noted below. Resolving such problems are beyond the scope of this wiki.

  1. Hard drives with logical/physical defects. Other symptoms include increasing frequency of computer crashes and windows errors.
  2. Defective random access memory modules (RAM) can have corrupt caches, leading to data corruption on the hard drive. Other symptoms include software crashes or running out of memory.
  3. A Defective power supply can cause instability in your system's memory or on the hard drive. Unless the unit is near death, problems are usually only noticeable when there is increased power demand, such as when playing a game (or a high definition movie). Some players, including Gaile Gray, have resolved data repair issues by replacing their power supply unit.
  4. Problems with the motherboard or video card are less common; they also tend to affect all computer operations.

Many users consider it as a backup strategy, but it is quite different from the traditional backup technique as archived components are moved to a separate Outlook PST and can be accessed when required. Sometimes, archive.pst denies access due to traces of corruption that the file encounters. In such cases, it becomes important to repair corrupt Outlook archive PST file to gain access to inaccessible data.

Introduction to ScanPST.exe

Outlook offers a helpful utility named as ScanPST, also known as Inbox Repair Tool to repair the corrupt archive.pst file. The location of the archive.pst is based on the version of the Windows installed on the system as shown below:

For Outlook 2010:

Windows 7 & Windows Vista:

Windows XP:

If any previous version of Outlook is installed on the machine, the archive that is created on the previous version can be found at the following location:

  1. Before you launch ScanPST.exe, close Outlook application, and backup the PST file that needs to be repaired.
  2. Next, execute ScanPST.exe which is normally located at “C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office15.
  3. The location of ScanPST.exe may vary depend on the version of the Office installed on the machine. You can find it using Search function available in Windows explorer.

Below is the process to execute ScanPST.exe to Repair Corrupt Archive.pst :

  1. Double-click on ‘ScanPST.exe’ to launch the PST Repair software

2.   Click on the Browse button to locate the corrupt PST file

3.   Once the file is located, click on the Open button to upload the archive.pst file

4.  Next, click on Start to begin the repair procedure

Note: The tool will then begin analyzing the archive.pst for consistency check that consists of 8 phases. Some of the phases take a bit longer based on the volume and level of corruption within the file. Once the analysis phase is completed, the tool will display a scan report along with further alternates.

Important Points!

  • When the Inbox Repair Tool initiates the repair procedure, it might appear like the process hangs in between, while it actually doesn’t. In fact, the tool is making a replica of the selected archive.pst file in the background.
  • The time that the inbuilt PST repair software or ScanPST takes in making a copy of the selected file solely depends on the volume of the file as well as the speed of the system hard drive.
  • If the process remains in a hang state after 10 minutes and if there is no hard drive activity or the repair procedure has actually not begun, there might be an issue with the repair process itself.

Managing Corrupted Files with PST Enterprise

The Barracuda PST Enterprise client will scan every message in every PST file that it finds. This means that it will discover all corrupted files, and all corrupted items in each of those files. It will even discover corrupted items within files that appear to be healthy because they are open in Outlook and are being accessed successfully by an end user.

When PST Enterprise discovers a corrupted file, the Health indicator in the PST Enterprise Admin Console for that file will be set to “Corrupt”, and it will move on to the next file. No further processing will be attempted for the corrupted file at this point. PST Enterprise does not attempt to initiate the repair of any corrupted files itself, as this could potentially result in valuable data being lost.

As discussed above, the IT administrator should review each corrupted file individually with the end user and decide the most appropriate action to be taken for that file. They should also bear in mind the importance of the data within it and the risk of losing at least some of it. Other actions that could be taken instead of trying to repair a file or skipping the corrupted items will include restoring to a backup or just deleting the file.

Repairing PST files
If the decision is to attempt a repair on a corrupted file and retain as much data as possible, Barracuda recommends the IT administrator run Microsoft’s free Inbox Repair Tool (ScanPST) against that file.

If this resolves the corruption, you can then mark the file as “Healthy” in the PST Enterprise Admin Console, which will trigger the PST Enterprise Client to scan the file again. If it discovers additional corruptions in that same file, it will again be flagged as “Corrupt”, and you will need to follow the same process again.

Skipping corrupted items
PST Enterprise can be configured to skip up to a set number of individual corrupted items in each file before that particular file is considered corrupt. However, this option should be used with caution as it will result in data from from the corrupted items being lost.

Minimizing the problem
The PST Enterprise client includes two features that IT administrators can use to help minimize future problems with corrupted PST files. First, it can be configured to modify each user’s Outlook profile so that they cannot create any new PST files or update existing ones. Second, it can compact any existing PST files it discovers that are currently open in Outlook. This will eliminate any unused space embedded within the file and reduce the overall file size, both of which will lessen the risk of future corruptions.
