Using HBO Now on a Compatible Device

Though you’ll likely want to use HBO Now on your PC to watch your programs with a larger picture, there are some reasons why you may want to know how to use HBO Now on another compatible device. With an Internet connection, you can take HBO Now with you wherever you go, and watch it whenever you want. This lesson will show you how to use HBO Now on another compatible device, and how it differs from using it on your PC.
(For a list of compatible HBO Now devices, check out this tutorial.)

Download and sign up for an HBO Now account

In order to get a subscription to HBO Now, you must first register with a compatible device. Search for HBO Now in your app store and download it, and follow the steps to register for an account. Then, sign in to your HBO Now account.

You are now signed in to HBO Now on your device, and can begin using it to stream your favourite HBO shows! Below we will show you how to use the service on your device, using an Android mobile phone as an example. Other platforms will differ slightly, but the main controls and navigation will be the same.

How to stream content on HBO Now on your device: 4 differences from your PC

Any content you stream on your computer will automatically update to your account on your mobile devices. You can also set HBO Now up on as many devices as you like, streaming simultaneously. This means that your whole family (or all of your roommates) can enjoy HBO Now at the same time!

There are a few ways you can go about finding programs you want to see on HBO Now on your device. This process is very similar to how you use HBO Now on your computer; it is just set up differently to be better optimized for your device. So how is HBO Now different from when you use it on your PC? Try using these tricks to navigate through HBO Now on your device:

1. The home page

On your device, the home page of HBO Now has far less content and options than your web browser version. From the top, you can cycle through what’s Featured by HBO, and what is currently Trending with other users. You can then scroll down the page to see what is listed in these two categories. A static bar will also form across the top to suggest you continue watching your last program – tap the bar to do this, or tap the X to close it.

From this page, you can also tap the magnifying glass in the top right corner to open up a search box in order to look for specific content, if you know exactly what you’re looking for. HBO Now will suggest movies and shows for you as you type, but only by name. This means you should know what you’re looking for if you use the search function.

2. Finding your favourite HBO shows and movies

To navigate through the device-version of HBO Now, most of your options will come from the menu bar. This is an icon of three horizontal lines in the top left corner, and you tap it to go almost anywhere on the app.

Tap on it to choose from a selection of browsing and additional options. Tap on one of the following sections to browse through content in that section: Series, Movies, Kids, Comedy, Sports, Documentaries, or Collections.

From each of these screens, scroll through further categories such as Featured, All, Series, Movies, or other genres and styles of the content you are searching through. Tap on any of these at the top to filter your selections, or scroll down to mine through all that HBO Now has to offer you in that category.

Each category (except for Featured) is sorted alphabetically, but unlike with your web browser, there is no way to quickly jump to another letter. Don’t worry though – the app scrolls quickly! And remember, you can still search at any time by tapping the magnifying glass.

3. Changing your settings and account

Rather than tapping your name at the top of the screen like the browser-based version of HBO now, in the app, you need start by tapping the menu button. Then select Settings at the very bottom of the list.

From here you can update your Profile, Billing Information, Parental Controls, Video Playback, and Notifications. You can also access the HBO Now Help, Privacy Policy, Terms of Use, and Legal Notices. Change any of these settings the same way you would on your computer.

This is also how you sign out from HBO Now. From any page, tap the menu, select Settings, and tap the blue Sign Out button at the bottom.

The only additional option is the Video Playback, which allows you to change two functions. The first is WiFi Only, which when selected, means that you will only stream content with a WiFi connection – never with data. The second is Cellular Playback Warning, which will warn you that streaming HBO Now shows and movies with data uses a large amount. For more information about data usage, visit our tutorial on HBO Now data usage.

4. Adding to and accessing your Watchlist

Adding movies and shows to your Watchlist in the HBO Now app is quite different than it is in browser-based version, as there is no way to move a cursor over the program icons. If you tap on any program in the app, it will immediately begin playback. To add to the Watchlist, tap the name of the program below the icon, and then tap Add to Watchlist.

In the HBO Now app, the Watchlist is not located at the top of every page (as it is in the browser-based version). Here, you can find it by tapping the menu, and selecting the second option, Watchlist. From here you can browse through the programs you’ve added to the Watchlist, or select Continue Watching at the top to continue watching your current programs.

You cannot filter your Watchlist with the app, so they will automatically be organized by whatever is most recently added. Remove an item from your Watchlist by tapping on it, and selecting Remove From Watchlist. In the app, you can also press Edit in the top right corner to begin selecting programs, and then press Delete. You can also press Select All and then Delete to remove every item from your Watchlist.

How to use the HBO Now app video player

When browsing through the HBO Now app, you might come across a movie or show that you want to watch immediately. If this is the case, you can always tap on the white play symbol in the bottom-left corner of each program icon.  You can also tap a program to select it, then click on the program icon.

The video player in the app is very similar to the one on your PC, but there are some minor differences. Just tap the screen anywhere to make the controls appear. Also, depending on which device you have chosen, you may need to enable the screen rotation function, especially if you are using a mobile device. This way, your program will play in landscape and full screen, rather than in a small window on the screen.

  • There is no speaker icon in the app video player, so you must use the controls on your device to raise or lower the volume.
  • The pause icon will appear in the very center of your screen – tap on it to stop playback. This automatically turns into the play button, which you can tap when you want to resume watching your movie or show.

  • To skip your playback ten seconds ahead, tap the +10 symbol to the right of the pause button. You can also press the -10 symbol on the left to skip your program back ten seconds.

  • Along the bottom of the controls is a seek bar, which allows to you skip to a specific point in the program. You would typically use this function if you are continuing playback for something you have already started watching.

  • In the top-right corner of the video player is a square with three dots inside of it, which is the caption button. Tap it to turn on captions; you can also adjust your caption settings, including the font size, color, and more.

  • To exit the video player, tap the arrow in the top-left corner, next to the name of the program that you are watching.

That’s the basic run-down of how to use HBO Now on a compatible device, and how its’ different from doing so on your PC. Remember that streaming on another device, especially a mobile phone, can run up your data bill extensively!

How to Use HBO Now on a Computer

Now that you’ve signed up for an HBO Now account, you want to start watching HBO right away! Though you have to register with a compatible device, once you have registered, you can sign in to your HBO Now account on your computer and watch shows right on your PC or Mac. Read below for a detailed description of how to use HBO Now on your computer, or visit our tutorial on using HBO Now on a compatible device.

Signing in to your HBO Now account

1. Open your web browser and visit to access the online streaming service.

2. Enter your email address and password, and click SIGN IN TO HBO NOW.

If you have a subscription through your TV service provider, click Sign In Here, and click on your provider. You can then sign in with your provider username and password.

You are now signed in to HBO Now, and can begin using it to stream your favourite HBO shows!

How to stream content on HBO Now

Now that you are signed in to HBO Now, you can begin to choose from HBO’s extensive lists of series, movies, documentaries, and much more. There are a few ways you can go about doing this:

1. From the main page

If you’re not sure where to start, browse around the main page of HBO Now. At the top, you will see a banner that skips through the shows or movies HBO has chosen to feature to its viewers. Use the white arrows on either side to browse through these features and click on one if it looks interesting to you.

Scroll down to see various categories that you can choose from such as “Series,” “Comedy,” or “Kids.” Click the white arrow to the right of each category to continue scrolling through it if you want to see more shows from that category.

If you move your cursor over the icon for the program, you can watch it immediately by clicking on the white play symbol. If you don’t want to watch it right now, click on ADD TO WATCHLIST instead. For an explanation of the Watchlist, see step 4 below.

This is a good way to look for something to watch if you’re not entirely sure what you’re looking for, or you simply want to see just how much HBO has to offer you. You can get back to this page at any time by clicking the HBO Now logo in the top left corner of your screen.

2. By type of content or genre

If you know what kind of content you may be looking for, or what you’re in the mood for, try searching by genre from the top menu bar of HBO Now. Select an option from the top menu, or click More to see all of them.

Scroll down to see an alphabetized list of everything HBO has in that genre. Click on the white letters on the right side to jump to a particular place in the alphabet.

Click on any program to view your options for it, or if you would like to start watching it. Some shows only allow you to see recent content, so be sure to keep up with your favourite shows.

3. Search for content

If you know exactly what you’re looking for, skip the browsing and use HBO Now’s search function. Click the magnifying glass in the top menu bar to open a search window. Type the name of what you are looking for and press the "Enter" key on your keyboard to see if HBO Now has it.

As you type, suggestions will be made for you. Click on any program to get more information about what is available. Remember that this search is only by program name, so you must know what you are looking for. Click the white X in the top right corner to close the search bar.

4. From your Watchlist

HBO Now has a function called the "Watchlist," which allows you to add content that you can watch later without needing to try and find it again. As you are browsing, simply move your cursor over a program and click ADD TO WATCHLIST to add something to your list. To access your list, click Watchlist in the top right corner of your screen at any time.

From here, you can select any program that you’ve added to the list, or click Continue Watching to continue a program that you have already begun watching. These programs will automatically add themselves to your Watchlist, so it is not necessary to add them to your list before you close the video player.

You can sort your shows with the drop-down menu at the top of your Watchlist by Newest or Alphabetical. Remove an item from your Watchlist by moving your cursor over it and selecting REMOVE FROM WATCHLIST, or selecting Remove All at the top of your Watchlist screen. Close the Watchlist at any time by clicking the white X at the top right of the screen.

How to use the HBO Now video player

Once you have selected a program to watch, click the white play symbol in the center of it to begin playback. You will see a small window with the video in it, and the video will begin playing. It is typical for an advertisement for other content to be played at the beginning of the video.

Once the movie or show begins playing, you can use the various controls in the video player to customize your viewing experience. Just move your cursor over the viewing pane to make the controls appear.

  • The speaker icon in the top right corner is the volume control. Click along the line beside it to raise or lower the volume.

  • Click the pause icon in the bottom left corner to temporarily stop playback. This can be useful if your video is constantly buffering (loading slowly). This will turn into the play button, which you can click to resume play. You can also press the space bar on your keyboard to pause and play.

  • To skip your playback ten seconds ahead, click the +10 symbol near the bottom right. You can also press the -10 symbol near the bottom left to skip your program back ten seconds (in case you missed something). Use the seek bar in between these two icons to skip to a specific point in the program. You would typically use this function if you are continuing playback for something that you have already partially watched.

  • Beside the +10 button on the bottom right is a square with three dots inside of it. This is the caption button. Click it to turn on captions; you can also adjust your caption settings, including the font size, color, and more.

  • The final control in the video player is the full screen button on the very bottom right, which looks like 4 arrows pointing inward. Click on this to make your video take up your device's entire screen, and click it again to return the video player to a normal size. You can also press the "Escape" key on your keyboard to exit full screen mode.

How to change your HBO Now settings, profile, or account

To change your HBO Now settings, begin by clicking on your name in the top right corner of any window.

From this screen, you can access any of your HBO Now settings and preferences, and update your account information. It is also how you sign out of HBO Now. Click on any of the selections on the right side to cycle through your pages, choosing from Profile, Notifications, Billing Information, Parental Controls, or Sign Out. Click the white X at any time to close this menu. Below is a breakdown of each of these selections.

Click the blue Edit Profile button to change any aspects of your profile, including your name, email address, password, ZIP Code, or to add a phone number. You will need to sign in again to make any of these changes. Simply make the changes, and click Save Changes to finish.

Under Notifications, you can click the check box that says “Yes, I want to receive offers and updates” to mark or unmark it. By default, this is marked, so if you would like to prevent HBO Now from sending you emails, make sure to uncheck the box.

Billing Information

Under Billing Information, HBO Now will give you a quick summary of your current account, letting you know how long you have paid your subscription for, and what your current rate is. Click on Manage Your Subscription to alter the details through the provider you signed up with (most likely youre device's app store).

Parental Controls

Here you can modify or enable parental controls on your HBO Now Account. Select a rating for movies and TV shows from the two drop down menus, and enter a 4-digit PIN number to lock the account. Click Enable Parental Controls when you are finished.

Note that once you enable the parental controls, you cannot disable them. You can however change the Movie ratings to R, and the TV ratings to MA, which removed the restrictions on the account.

Sign Out

To Sign Out of your HBO Now Account, select Sign Out from the far right menu. That’s all you need to do!

HBO MAX updates: The new streaming service HBO MAX is scheduled to launch in May 2020. It will include all the current HBO streaming TV content, plus more movies and new original series.

One thing that HBO MAX isn’t sneak-peek-ing is a firm price. However, if you’re an HBO NOW customer before HBO MAX launches, it says you’ll be able to switch over for the same $14.99 per month.

Sounds like it’s the right time to sign up for HBO NOW, huh?

What is HBO NOW?

HBO NOW is HBO®’s streaming service for cable-cutters. Unlike HBO GO—which has a similar name and look—you don’t need a cable subscription to watch HBO shows online.

At $14.99 per month, HBO NOW costs about the same as a cable HBO subscription (though the traditional channel’s cost varies by TV provider).

But most importantly, you can be part of big premiers like Game of Thrones and Veep, and you can stream other HBO shows whenever you want.

  • Equivalent pricing to HBO through cable subscription
  • Big premier streams
  • No contract

  • Higher monthly price than Hulu or Netflix
  • No offline viewing
  • 24-hour delay for live shows

What you get with HBO NOW

HBO NOW collects decades of HBO’s original series—shows that redefined television. You can watch its exclusive archives as well as live premiers.

You’ll also find a rotating selection of movies, kids programming (like Sesame Street), stand-up comedy recordings, and thoughtful documentaries.

Most popular original shows:

  • Game of Thrones
  • The Sopranos

What you don’t get with HBO NOW

While HBO NOW uploads its big premiers for streaming, it doesn’t technically have livestreaming capabilities. Unfortunately, that means you can’t watch live TV, since those recordings haven’t been formatted for online viewing yet.

Instead, HBO NOW typically uploads live recordings within 24 hours of its cable TV premiers. You won’t get Last Week Tonight with John Oliver until the next morning.

There’s also a handful of HBO original series that haven’t made it onto HBO NOW. But over the past few years, some of its missing shows—like Mr. Show and Tenacious D—found their way to HBO NOW, so we’re still holding out hope for the rest.

Shows we wish were included:

  • Tales from the Crypt
  • The Corner

HBO NOW original series and movies

HBO NOW has over one hundred original HBO series, even more comedy specials, and over three hundred documentaries. If you’re not sure where to start, check out our recommendations below.

HBO NOW must-sees

Original SeriesStand-upDocumentaries
The WireChris Rock: Bigger & BlackerLeaving Neverland
The SopranosTig Notaro: Boyish Girl InterruptedBeware the Slenderman
Game of ThronesDave Chappelle: Killin’ Them SoftlyBeing Serena
VeepSarah Silverman: We Are MiraclesMommy Dead and Dearest
Curb Your EnthusiasmPaul F. Tompkins: Driven to DrinkGoing Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief

If you’re not ready to get sucked into one of HBO’s epic series, we get it—we’ve heard that some people have lives beyond their TV. (Not us.)

Fortunately, HBO NOW also holds appeal for people who want to use HBO NOW primarily as a movie streaming service. Its rotating lineup of movies brings in fresh new films every month and saves you from standing in line for your Redbox rental.

Upcoming in March 2020, you can expect new movies like Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw, Yesterday, and a bunch of lackluster films to fill up the roster. But hey, Fight Club is making a triumphant return, so maybe you can watch that for the twentieth time.

HBO NOW payment options

You’ll enter your credit card information when you sign up, and HBO NOW will charge the card once a month on the anniversary of your signup. That $14.99 covers the cost of subscription for the following month.

If you don’t want to pay automatically, you can turn off Auto-Renew. After your current month is up, your subscription will end until you renew your payment manually.

HBO NOW specs and features

Here’s what to expect from HBO NOW’s streaming experience.

Multiple streams

Multiple Streams

HBO NOW3–4Included

While HBO NOW comes with a number of streams, we don’t recommend sharing your HBO NOW subscription with every friend who wants to catch up on Game of Thrones—you’re risking identity theft on top of your to-watch list getting messed up.

Another problem is it can be hard to know how many simultaneous streams HBO NOW allows, since it dodges that question.

But at, we experimented with how many streams we could run at once. We were able to stream four shows on four different IP addresses, but during a later test we could only stream three.

So we can’t promise that you can stream that many—or that you can’t stream more. To quote one team member: “Maybe you can get away with four shows at once on a Monday at 3 p.m., but when it’s a Game of Thrones premiere, you only get one.”

But on most days, the kids can watch Land Before Time in one room while you check out Barry in another, and your significant other rewatches Six Feet Under for the third time to unwind during their business trip.

Still, it would be better to know for sure, instead of getting this great service with inconsistent features.

Playback features and commercial skipping on HBO NOW

On demandPrice

Along with all the playback features that make streaming TV so great, HBO NOW offers a 10-second rewind skip. This is a great boon if your TV-watching buddy can never remember who’s related to who on Game of Thrones, and they regularly interrupt the show to ask.

But HBO NOW won’t interrupt your show—not even with commercials.

That said, at the beginning of most episodes, HBO NOW does promote its other shows in a 15- to 90-second clip. It doesn’t have a skip button for this, but you can fast-forward.

Be careful, though—if you overestimate how long the commercial will be, you could accidentally ruin a great cold open.

Also, HBO NOW, if you’re reading this: promote responsibly. We don’t need a commercial to see how funny 2 Dope Queens is during our 2 Dope Queens binge-watch.

Closed captioning on HBO NOW

The closed captioning service on HBO NOW is a real treat. It’s taken the feature beyond basic accessibility and into a customizable masterpiece, thanks to its variety of options:

  • 7 fonts
  • 5 font sizes
  • 8 colors for font, background, and caption window
  • 4 opacity levels for font, background, and caption window

Whether you want tiny captions that hardly disturb the eerie pastoral backgrounds of Sharp Objects or ones so enormous and bold you’ll never miss The Wire’s superb one-liners, HBO NOW has you covered.

Streaming quality and interface

The picture quality on HBO is fine, but not as striking as we’d like for its series’ beautiful visuals.

For example, the frame rate is slow enough that the fast-paced battles of Game of Thrones become choppy and blurry.

And HBO NOW automatically adjusts your streaming quality to fit your internet speeds. That’s great for avoiding buffering, but it would be better if it gave you the option to set the quality yourself. Sometimes it’s worth waiting to see everything in pristine condition.

Fuzzy dragons aren’t nearly as scary as crystal-clear ones.

The interface, on the other hand, is as flawless as Mahershala Ali’s haircut in the screenshot below.

The top image rotates through the hottest shows right now.

The home page is easy to maneuver and comes with show recommendations that are on point and unobtrusive. You can go straight to the latest shows, or dive deeper into one of HBO NOW’s categories:

  • Series
  • Movies
  • Kids
  • Comedy
  • Sports
  • Documentaries
  • Collections

The Collections section is especially helpful if you’re not sure what to watch next. It points you towards HBO’s essentials, new movies, last-chance-to-watch movies, and a handful of smaller collections things like “High-Octane Action Flicks” to spark your curiosity.

Now that’s an explosive combination.

HBO NOW app and device compatibility

In addition to using the HBO NOW website to stream on your computer, you can watch the HBO app on most streaming devices:

  • Amazon Fire TV and Amazon Fire tablet
  • Android phone, tablet, or TV
  • Apple TV
  • Chromecast
  • iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch
  • PlayStation 4
  • Roku
  • Samsung Smart TV
  • Xbox One

However, in 2019, HBO NOW discontinued its app on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. If you need an excuse to upgrade your streaming equipment, HBO NOW might be the catalyst you’re looking for.

Promotions and deals

In the past, HBO NOW offered a student deal for $9.99 per month. Unfortunately, the deal is no longer available—but we’ll let you know if we see it come around again.

If you’re looking for other ways to get HBO, check out “What’s the Cheapest Way to Go for HBO?” We go into detail on how to get HBO for life with an AT&T Wireless plan and how much traditional TV providers charge for HBO subscriptions.

Our final take

HBO NOW gives you access to HBO’s premium shows any time you want—and it’s cheaper than an HBO subscription through most cable TV companies.

Moreover, we like the slick layout, viewing suggestions, and next-level closed captioning.

Still, we wish HBO NOW allowed you to set your video quality, instead of decreasing the quality to match low internet speeds. And it would be nice to watch Last Week Tonight when it comes out rather than the morning after.

But overall, HBO NOW is an excellent option for cord-cutters. Try it for Game of Thrones, and stay for decades of the best shows on TV.

How does HBO NOW work?
Once you register an account with HBO NOW, you can download the HBO NOW app to watch HBO shows on your streaming devices. Or you can stream through your computer’s internet browser from the HBO NOW website.

What makes HBO NOW different from cable?
HBO NOW is delivered through your internet connection instead of a traditional TV connection. While you can’t watch what’s on TV, you can view any show on demand from HBO’s collection.

It also has no contract, so you’re free to unsubscribe whenever you like.

Is HBO NOW free?
No, HBO NOW costs $14.99 per month, but you can try it out for free with a seven-day trial.

Not sure your internet plan can handle streaming?

HBO NOW adjusts its image quality to match your internet speeds. This helps you avoid buffering, but if you want stunning video instead of a mosaic you can hear, it may be time to upgrade your internet.

You’ll need about 5 Mbps internet download speed for every individual stream. We recommend having at least 25 Mbps, which is the FCC standard for broadband internet.

To find faster internet providers in your area, enter your ZIP code below:

Can I watch HBO NOW on multiple devices simultaneously?
Yes, we were able to stream up to four shows at once on HBO NOW, but your luck may vary.

Can you watch HBO NOW offline?
No, HBO NOW doesn’t have any offline viewing capabilities. You’ll have to make sure you have internet access to watch the shows you want.

Are HBO NOW and HBO GO the same?
No. While both services help you stream HBO’s extensive library, HBO NOW and HBO GO have one big difference: you can sign up for HBO NOW directly, but HBO GO comes only through an HBO subscription with a seperate TV provider.

Either way, you’ll get the same excellent streaming content.

Is there an HBO NOW gift card?
Yes, you can pick up an HBO NOW gift card at retail locations like Walmart, Target, Best Buy, CVS Pharmacy, Rite Aid, or GameStop. Or you can send a digital gift card through eGifter.

How can you get HBO NOW?
Go to the HBO NOW website and start with a free seven-day trial. Try out the service, and if you’re a fan like we are, stick around for the monthly subscription.

Nearly a year after it was announced, HBO Max — a new streaming service from HBO and WarnerMedia — has officially launched. This streaming service is different from other streaming services in a couple of ways, so we’ve broken down all the details for you below.

It Costs More Than Hulu Or Netflix

HBO Max costs $14.99 per month for new subscribers, but is free for current HBO or HBO NOW customers. That’s more than Netflix ($8.99) Hulu ($5.99), or a Disney+ bundle that includes Disney+, EPSN+ and Hulu for just $12.99 total.

Right now, HBO Max is offering a 7-day free trial for new subscribers with no restrictions, to check out whether or not the service is right for you.

If you don’t want to sign up for an account on your computer, there are a couple of other ways to subscribe:

Through A Cable Company

HBO Max comes with a traditional subscription to HBO, which you can add to a cable package through the following providers: AT&T TV, DIRECTV, U-Verse TV, Cox, Optimum, Spectrum, Verizon Fios TV, and others. Call up your cable provider for more information on how to sign up.

On A Smartphone Or Tablet

Download the HBO Max app on your iOS or Android device, and you’ll be prompted to log into your account. If you don’t have one, you can sign up from inside the app itself.

On Some Media Streamers, Game Consoles, and Smart TVs

The HBO Max app is available on Apple TV, Samsung TV’s released after 2016, the Xbox One, and the PlayStation 4. HBO Max is not currently available on Roku and Fire TV devices. Once downloaded, open the app and you’ll be prompted to log into your account. If you don’t have one, you can sign up from inside the app itself.

Stream a “Curated” Library Including Friends, Game Of Thrones and Harry Potter

All streaming services work the same way: pick what you want to watch, and start streaming. What differentiates HBO Max is its library of exclusive catalogue titles and upcoming original shows. HBO says there are already 10,000 hours of “curated” content available to stream, and we’ve highlighted some of the most interesting titles below.

WarnerMedia owns the rights to movies and TV shows going back 100 years, so this is the only place you’ll be able to stream classic shows like FriendsRick and Morty, Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown, and Doctor Who. The media company also owns the rights to several blockbuster films, like 2001: A Space Oddysey, Harry Potter, Friday The 13th, A Hard Days Night, Casablanca, The Lord of the Rings, Citizen Kane, North By Northwest, Gone With The Wind, and Braveheart.

An HBO Max subscription naturally includes access to the entire HBO catalog, which includes The Wire, The Sopranos, Sex and the City, Game of Thrones, Veep, Curb Your Enthusiasm, and Westworld. Finally, HBO Max is the only service that allows you to stream anime films from the legendary Japanese film studio Studio Ghibli. This marks the first time these films have been available to stream on any platform. See more of what to stream on HBO Max here.

HBO is Also Developing New TV Shows and Movies

Beyond catalog titles, HBO Max has an entire list of original TV shows and movies called “HBO Originals,” which are slated to come out through the end of the year. The service has launched with On The Record (pictured above), a documentary chronicling the life of famous music executive Drew Dixon, Love Life, a “romantic comedy anthology” series whose first season stars Anna Kendrick, Zoë Chao, Peter Vack, and Sasha Compère, and The Not-Too-Late Show With Elmo.

HBO Original TV shows have launched with a handful of episodes, and new ones will be released on a weekly basis. The number of episodes per season will vary based on the show. HBO Max’s library isn’t as deep as the ones you’ll find on Netflix or Hulu, but its slate of exclusives and originals help keep it competitive.

HBO Max Does Not Fully Replace HBO Go or HBO NOW

HBO is currently running three separate streaming services; here’s how they all break down.

  • HBO NOW allows you to stream HBO content without a cable TV subscription.
  • HBO GO allows traditional HBO subscribers to stream their content on mobile devices, smart TVs or media streamers.
  • HBO Max includes access to all of HBO’s content plus exclusive original programming, and hundreds of catalogue TV shows and movies.

One other addition: Amazon Prime members can add HBO to their channel lineup, and stream current HBO series, movies and documentaries like Insecure, Westworld and Real Time With Bill Maher. Amazon’s offering a free 7-day trial to HBO right now, though this will only get you existing HBO content and not the new HBO Max content.

You Can’t Stream in 4K Or HDR (High Dynamic Range) Just Yet

HBO Max tops out at 1080P (full HD) and doesn’t support HDR (high dynamic range), a video technology that makes colors and shadows look more realistic. These features may come in the future, but are not available now.

New Content Will Be Added Over Time, and Shows and Movies May Cycle In and Out

One big difference between HBO Max and streaming services like Netflix is that HBO and WarnerMedia own the rights to the content they’re streaming. That means movies and TV shows won’t be taken down because licensing agreements have run out.

But: WarnerMedia’s archives are huge, so it may cycle some shows and movies on and off HBO Max as it sees fit. This is never going to be a service that allows you to see every single thing in the WarnerMedia vault, at least not for now.

More and more traditional media companies have created their own streaming services (NBC’s Peacock launches this July, CBS launched CBS All Access in 2014) to maintain exclusive streaming rights on their content, and avoid splitting revenue with a third party.

HBO and WarnerMedia can acquire the rights to more shows and movies, so the HBO Max library has the opportunity grow over time, but that’s not guaranteed.

The Bottom Line

If you’re already an HBO subscriber, the choice of whether or not to get HBO Max has been decided for you; start streaming. If you’re on the fence, give the 7-day free trial a chance. As we said earlier, HBO Max doesn’t have the same number of TV shows and movies as its competitors, but its deep back catalogue and upcoming exclusives won’t be available to stream anywhere else.
